At times in life, God places a person or even a place on your heart in a real and powerful way. For John Elford and Stephen Wilks, this compelling burden turned their attention to a foreign country. The two, both from Jackson Tennessee traveled to Nicaragua for a mission trip to assess and directly affect the needs of the people of Nicaragua.

Throughout the years, Nicaragua has seen many hardships on the land and the people including volcanic eruptions, a devastating hurricane, a revolution that forced the people to abandon their homes and heritage for many years, and currently, the epidemic of disease and malnutrition widely throughout the children.

While in the mountains of Matagalpa, God began to give John a vision for the future.  El Ayudante, a Great Commission ministry serving Central America and Mexico – who’s purpose is to bring people to Jesus by continuing His ministry of service, had a need to build a team house in Matagalpa. This team house would serve as a central location for mission teams from churches all over the United States. Without realizing the importance of his question, John inquired about the possibilities of acquiring a coffee plantation and was informed of a plantation for sale.

The land near Matagalpa is known throughout the coffee region for its outstanding coffee production. Coffee is the number one beverage in the world and over 70 percent of Americans drink a cup of coffee each day. As the coffee market grows at a faster pace than ever before and the demand for excellent coffee only continues to increase each day, John could hardly contain his excitement about the possibilities that the purchase of a coffee plantation could directly affect the ministry of El Ayudante and the people themselves. With support and the same excitement, Stephen Wilks joined John in the endeavor to turn a mountain into a mission.

In owning the farm, it is ensured that you are not purchasing just any coffee. Gusta Java roasts coffee that is grown in a manner that benefits both the growers and the environment. The vision is simple, to work first hand with the farmers and improve the quality of life in Nicaragua not only at the farm but in the entire country itself.

A portion of our proceeds from the sale of Gusta Java coffee is sent to El Ayudante. The investment is bountiful in providing people with economic, medical and social relief along with the spiritual development that impacts the people of Nicaragua directly. Both Gusta Java and El Ayudante help hundreds of people and hope to increase that number dramatically in the future with the sale of the finest coffee grown in Central America.
